Iringa Handwoven Handbag Basket with leather flap (Double Straps)

Our versatile Iringa basket is made in Tanzania from seasonal Milulu grass by talented rural female artisans. This beautifully handcrafted statement piece can be used as a handbag, beach bag, or picnic basket. They come in a variety of vibrant and neutral colours.

Our artisans use a reed-like swamp grass and natural dyes, giving the baskets a natural, durable and timeless feeling. The weavers often have to walk several kilometres to harvest the grass before carrying it back to their village to dry. When dried, an artisan weaves the basket by hand, carefully intertwining the traditional patterns. Women mostly work from their home, giving them the opportunity to complete their weaving along with their household tasks. Completing a medium size basket can take up to one week. 

Every basket is unique is an example of the extraordinary craft skills of the weavers. Due to handcrafted process every basket is unique and colours and sizes may vary.
